Bra Fitting

What to expect? How does getting fitted for a bra work?

  • Getting fitted for a bra can seem intimidating, but the bra professionals at Kanvas will ensure you get fitted with the right size so you leave confident and comfortable.
  • First, your bra fitter will introduce herself and ask what kind of bra you are interested in or if you have any questions.
  • Then, the fitter will measure you in three different areas around the bust using a soft tape measure. She will measure you above the bust, at the bust, and below the bust. From these measurements she will determine your bra size and recommend a bra for you to try on.

Common Bra Questions

How should a bra fit?

  • A new bra should feel snug when wearing it on the loosest hook and eye. The bra wearer should feel the bra against their body. If the bra can not be felt, then it is most likely too big, if the bra band is riding up, the bra is likely too small.

How long do bras last?

  • Typically, a bra that is properly cared for and worn correctly will last about 6-8 months. However, this is an average lifespan. Some bras have a shorter lifespan, while some bras will outlast that time frame. Washing machines cause the padding in bras to lose its shape, and wearing the same bra day after day will cause it to lose its elasticity. One of the easiest ways to expand the life of a bra is to have several bras on rotation to even out the wear and tear on them. Another way to help ensure a bra has a longer lifespan is by carefully following the care instructions.

Why is it important to have more than one bra?

  • Bras come in all different shapes and sizes, and one bra won’t be the perfect bra for every outfit or situation.

How often should someone be refitted?

  • It is recommended for women to be refitted at least once every year as bodies can change over a short time span.

Common Bra Problems and How to Solve Them

Bra Strap problems

  • Digging into shoulders
    • Bra straps that constantly dig into your shoulders can cause some serious pain and problems. No one should experience pain while wearing a bra. Even women with larger breasts can wear a bra without the nuisance of shoulder pain. Many women don’t know that it isn’t the straps that are meant to hold up the bra; it should be the band holding everything up. This problem could be solved by going down a band size in order to get more support from the band.
  • Bra straps constantly falling
    • Many people don’t know how to adjust their bra straps or don’t adjust their bra straps correctly. This can cause the straps to either dig into the wearer’s shoulders or continuously fall off the shoulders. Bra straps should be adjusted so two fingers can comfortably fit under the strap. Bra straps should not cause indentations on the shoulders after wear.

Bra Cup problems

  • Gaping and wrinkling
    • A bra should lie perfectly on the skin; however, many women experience gaping or wrinkling in their bra cups.
    • Gaping is usually caused by wearing a bra that is too large. If you’ve adjusted your bra so that your breast is in the center of the cup and it is still gaping, the solution may be going down a cup size. It may be possible that the bra is old and stretched out, and it may be time to get a new bra. Gaping can also happen if the bra is not the right shape or style for your bust. Every woman has a different body shape, breasts included. This means that a bra may not fit correctly if it is not suited for your breast shape.
  • Spillage over cups
    • If the wearer is experiencing spillage over the cups of the bra, it is often a size or style issue. A simple change to a full coverage bra or a larger cup size could solve this common dilemma.

Bra Band problems

  • Digging into sides
    • If a bra band is uncomfortable and digging into the sides of your body, more often than not the bra is probably too small. A bra should not be painful, and if a bra is causing any pain or discomfort it is not the right bra for you.
  • Rising Back Band
    • There are several possible reasons for a bra band riding up on the back. The first reason for this problem is that the bra straps may be adjusted too tightly. Another reason why this issue may occur is due to the bra band being too big. If a bra is fitted correctly, the bra band should be snug and fall straight across the back.

Different Styles of Bras

T-shirt: Designed to look smooth and molded, seamless, invisible even under a t-shirt. Come in a variety of colors, one of the most common types of bras. Easy to wear, an everyday bra.

Push-up: Designed to lift breasts towards the center of the chest to create cleavage. Oftentimes push-up bras use extra padding to create a fuller look. Good for when you want an elegant and feminine look.

Strapless: This bra is designed with no straps. Many strapless bras use a silicone or rubber lining along the cup edge to prevent slipping. Often used for special occasions when the no show look is desired.

Demi Bra: A partial cup style that covers half to three-quarters of the breast and also creates an uplifted appearance.

Racerback: The straps are designed in a X, Y, V shape to prevent slipping or stay hidden under a tank top.

Bralette: Typically, a bralette has no wires and little to no padding and provides minimal lift or support.

DD+ support bras: Designed for women who are well endowed, and are often molded and seamed, but most women prefer seamed because it provides the most comfort and support.

Bra Care Instructions

Taking proper care of bras is very important for getting the most out of them. Bra experts recommend hand washing bras in cold water with delicate detergent. It is important not to dry bras in the dryer as the agitation can cause the bra to lose its shape and deteriorate the bra structure. In order to dry bras after washing, first pat down the bra to remove as much moisture from the garment as possible, then lay the bra flat until it is completely dry.e
